Labour vs kit — how we price EV installs

We price labour separately from the charger unit — that works out fairer. Standard home labour is about £350–£400 (typically around £400). Longer runs across a garden, fence, path or driveway are usually £500–£600. A short 1–2 metre cable run is normally included in the labour price.

What we check before quoting

Mainly how far the consumer unit is from the charger location. That cable run is where most of the cost sits. We’ll also advise on a spare way and the appropriate RCD protection for EV charging, following current IET guidance.

Quick answers

What EV charger brands do you install?

Zappi, Ohme, EV Sync, and other reputable UK brands. We don’t fit no-name or unsupported brands without reliable UK technical support or warranty.

What do you check before quoting?

Mainly how far the consumer unit (fuse box) is from where the charger will go. That cable run is where most of the cost sits.

How long does a typical home install take?

About three hours on site.

What warranty do I get?

10 years on our workmanship. The charger unit has its own manufacturer warranty, separate from our guarantee, and some equipment comes with up to 25 years; exact cover depends on the brand and model.

How do you price an EV charger install?

We normally price labour separately from the charger unit — that works out fairer for clients. Standard install labour: about £350–£400 (typically around £400). Longer / awkward runs (across a garden, over a fence, round a path or driveway): usually £500–£600. The charger unit: you choose — for example a higher-end unit around £1,200 (e.g. Anderson) or a more affordable option around £350 (e.g. BG). A short cable run of about 1–2 metres is normally included in the labour price.

What makes it cheaper or more expensive?

Cheaper when the charger is close to the consumer unit and there’s a spare way on the board. Dearer when the cable run is long/awkward, there’s no spare way (we may need to fit a new board underneath), or the existing RCD is the old AC type and needs upgrading to the appropriate protection based on the existing RCD, charger DC protection and manufacturer requirements from the charger.

Do I need a consumer unit upgrade first?

Sometimes. If there are no spare ways, we’ll often fit a new board underneath. If the board is older and still has spare ways but only an AC-type RCD, we need Type A, F or B as needed after checking the existing RCD, charger DC protection and manufacturer requirements. We’ll tell you on the survey.

Do you help with grants and schemes?

No. Too many hoops to jump through to get the money back — it’s not worth our time. We keep it simple: clear labour + the kit you want.

Home vs workplace / landlord installs — any difference?

Not really on the labour side. Workplaces more often need a three-phase / 22 kW setup.

Smart chargers and load management — what do you recommend?

Load management / curtailment is a good idea. Most reputable chargers are smart and app-controlled these days anyway.

Where do you cover?

The whole of Birmingham and the West Midlands.

What if the existing electrics aren’t ideal?

We’ll assess on site. If the install is still a standard run, labour is still typically around £400. If we need board work or a long cable run, we’ll price that clearly first.

Does an EV charger need ongoing maintenance?

We recommend visual checks of the cable and connectors, following the manufacturer’s instructions and arranging periodic inspection where appropriate.

Biggest mistake people make before calling you?

Buying a cheap unheard-of charger off Amazon or eBay (often no real UK support, poor instructions). Stick to reputable UK brands and you’ll be fine.
