What a fire alarm check includes

A fire alarm check is a practical visit to see whether the system is working and suitable for the property. We inspect the alarms or panel, test detectors and call points, check sounders and interlinks, look at power and backup batteries, and note faults or end-of-life units.

We explain any issue in plain English and tell you what needs attention. We do not use alarm grades to frighten people. The right system depends on the building, occupants, escape routes, licence and fire risk assessment.

Smoke alarms and heat alarms

Smoke alarms are normally used on escape routes and living areas. Kitchens usually need a heat alarm because cooking fumes can trigger a smoke alarm. A heat alarm does not replace required smoke coverage. Do not cover or remove an alarm to stop nuisance alerts.

Grade D1, D2 or Grade A?

Grade D1 and D2 are mains-powered, interlinked domestic-style smoke and heat alarms. D1 has a sealed backup battery; D2 has a replaceable battery. Grade A is a panel-based system with detectors, sounders and usually call points. Your licence and risk assessment decide which is suitable. Ask us before changing a system.

Quick answers

Who needs a fire alarm check?

Landlords, HMO managers, letting agents, homeowners and businesses who need alarms checked, maintained or certified. We work across Birmingham and the West Midlands.

What happens during an inspection?

We test detectors, heat alarms, call points, sounders and interlinks. We check the panel or mains supply, backup power, alarm positions and visible condition. We record faults and explain the next step.

How often should alarms be checked?

Occupants should use the Test button regularly, usually weekly. Landlords and managers should check at each tenancy change and follow the system guidance, licence and risk assessment. Many systems need a formal inspection about every six months.

How much does it cost?

A typical three-bedroom inspection starts at £75. Larger HMOs, panel systems, repairs and travel can change the price. We confirm it before starting.

What if an alarm fails?

We tell you what has failed and whether it can be repaired or needs replacement. A chirp often means a low battery or an ageing unit. Do not open sealed alarms or work on mains wiring yourself.

When will I receive the certificate?

Where the system passes, we aim to provide clear paperwork on the visit. If work is needed, we explain what remains and issue the appropriate record after it is complete.

Do you maintain landlord and HMO systems?

Yes. We offer inspections, maintenance, repairs and scheduled visits for landlords, agents and property portfolios. Call 0121 798 2595 to discuss the property.
